Hiway Home
[4:24]
lyrics
Ronnie wrote this after driving from Fayetteville Arkansas to Cochran Georgia...straight. Ronnie says it really wrote itself because it's pretty much exactly the way the trip happened.

Cope
[12:56]
lyrics
Perhaps reaching a bit futher than we should have, Cope was a massive undertaking for the tiny Roland 8-track recorder that we used. Comprised of several ideas linked into one giant production and clocking in at just under thirteen minutes, this is a conceptual piece that examines the human recovery process following the loss of a loved one. Yeah, just your average everyday feel-good anthem. Actually, Cope is pretty dark. You probably don't want to throw this on at party. Stick with it...the last section(Clear Blue Skies) is well worth the wait. Play this and you can get "down" with Deepwell.

Baby I Love You
[4:19]
lyrics
This is sorta the lyrical opposite of "Stay On"...with a wall of guitars. Ronnie,Cliff and guest guitarist Brian Layson(Will Hoge band) start out innocent enough, but somewhere after the re-intro Layson and Lee quickly carve Smith out of the picture and begin a celebratory six-string free for all! See!...Deepwell isn't always depressed....this is a very upbeat and happy Deepwell moment.

February Fool
[4:12]
lyrics
There are some guys who are so together in the romance department. They always buy their sweetheart's Valentines, birthday and Christmas presents early...or they buy her flowers even when there's no special occasion. This song was written for(and about)the rest of us poor souls that try, but still struggle to be romantic.

Hiway home 2 (loud mix w/final vox)
[4:33]
lyrics
This is the same cut but an alternate mix of Hiway song. It features Ronnie's final vocal and Cliff's guitar is up a little more in the mix.

Lisa (safe version)
[2:28]
One of the few Ronnie and Steve lyrical collaborations. It doesn't get any sweeter than this. it's as innocent as it can be. However, check out the alternate version and see how a change-up in production approach can transform the exact same sweet song into something downright sinister sounding. Gee..wonder what influences they drew from for this! Help! I knew the answer Yesterday.

Stay On
[5:33]
lyrics
This is a love song without the "L" word. The poor character in this song tries his best to pledge his love but just can't come out and say it. Through the chorus, the build up seems to indicate that he's gonna say it. "Girl I know I don't tell you this nearly enough..." Instead, after comparing her to a list of things he couldn't live without, he merely encourages her to stick around. This is his way of saying he loves her. He's not very romantic, but he's trying his best and he's totally sincere.

Cheap Guitar
[5:29]
Deepwell practices what they preach on this one.
Every guitar used to record this song was an ultra el cheapo. The opening guitar figure is Ronnie playing a 1963 Sears Silvertone with an amp bult into the case! Cliff played slide using an old Harmony with missing strings. Steve use a Trutone with a massive metal pickguard! The bass was a Univox Mosrite copy.
Ronnie wrote the song based on a story Steve tells about visiting an uncle as a child and always getting in trouble for sneaking back to a bedroom to look at an old guitar that was in a case hidden under a bed. He would just look at it because if anyone heard him playing it, he'd get in trouble.

Second Minute Hour Day(working title)
[6:53]
(notice: there's 15 seconds of silence before song starts playing)
Okay we're either brave or stupid for putting this on here. At least it's kinda hidden way back here on the "scrap iron" page. So, if you're here and you're considering playing this, consider yourself warned. This calamity is a very rough recording of a Deepwell song being born. Many times, we'll have little more than a basic chord structure and a frail arrangement before we start slogging through it at full volume. Sometimes it'll solidify into something cool, other times not so much. On this recording, you're hearing the bands very first attempt(and it sounds like it) of an idea I had been working on at home. With lyrics made up on the spot and vocals screamed in an effort to be heard over the blaring guitar amps, you can sense the fun we were having. In fact we were so caught up in it, that we were either oblivious or ignoring the fact that our instruments were out of tune. Despite this, I think Cliff's guitar is amazing. It 's how I imagine the ripping and twisting steel must of sounded as the Titanic sank. The "cherry on top of the cake" however, has to be Steve's "Don't lose the funk" comment at the end. It's interesting also that Laney Maynard is playing bass on this while it may be the first rehearsal we had with Joe. Anyway, the reason that we're putting this song here is because we're considering approaching this song again and we thought it'd be interesting to hear and compare "before and after". When we complete the production we'll post the result here. So...with that in mind...enjoy! these comments written by Ronnie

My Heart Breaks For You (alternate chorus lyric)
[5:46]
This is the original demo of My heart Breaks for You....it's a more stripped down version with Ronnie on acoustic and Steve on piano. Later, Ronnie changed the chorus lyric slightly for the full band version. But this take remains the favotite of the two.

It Makes No Difference written by: R. Robertson
[5:26]
Used by permission WB Music corp. OBO Medicine Hat Music ISRC No.184354 Written by Robbie Robertson of The Band. This is the only cover song we've ever recorded. There's no way we could ever come close to Rick Danko's moving performance of the song in the movie "the Last Waltz". He sang it like he was afraid he'd never get to sing it again. Although he didn't write the tune, he totally made it his own with his voice. Deepwell dedicates this unworthy effort to his memory.RIP
